  3. Separate prototype cells from production cells. The same building can do both; the same cell usually cannot.
  4. Require the same revision, material condition, quantity, and inspection assumption from every shortlisted shop.

Use a CNC or precision machine shop when the part is made by cutting metal or engineered plastic to a drawing, and the award depends on process, tolerance, inspection, and setup—not on a generic “machining” label.

  • material grade, temper or condition, and any approved substitutes
  • critical dimensions, GD&T, and surface-finish callouts
  • prototype versus production quantity and likely reorder cadence
  • inspection method, first-article expectation, and any certs the lot must carry
